The value of (dis)comfort.

Routines and familiarity are such a comfort, like the worn-out cuddle blankie or stuffy that many of us had as kids. While we all need to have a safe place we can return to, be it our home, a favorite hike or a book we’ve read a dozen times, a little bit of discomfort goes a long way in terms of personal development. I believe the same can be said for social change. Where and when does progress happen? Generally, it’s when society is backed into a corner and is forced to adapt. And it often takes someone or some organization to “agitate” to create a change reaction.

The #MeToo movement is a great example of a social change-in-progress. For years the status quo existed in Hollywood. That is, until New York Times journalists Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey stepped in as the agitators, loosening layers of sediment and bad behaviours. Since the publishing of their expose on Harvey Weinstein, She Said, the oft-silent issue of workplace harassment has been amplified and workplaces are forced to act.
